Annual Charity Awards Presentations

The Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons' Charity makes its first grants

This year’s annual Provincial Charity Awards event was held on 8th November at the Strode Park Foundation in Herne near Canterbury. Strode Park, who kindly offered to host the event, is a charity that provides care and support to meet the changing and individual needs of people with quite severe disabilities.

This year for the first time the event was held under the auspices of the recently launched Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons’ Charity, with awards totalling £19,000 being presented to a number of local good causes.

Members, guests and recipients of the awards were welcomed with tea and biscuits and took this first opportunity to learn about each other’s charitable work.

On this occasion twelve local good causes and charities were invited to receive donations totalling £19,000 from the Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons’ Charity. In addition, representatives from the local branch of SkillForce explained how they were applying the first instalment of £25,000 they received recently from the Freemasons’ Grand Charity.

The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Geoffrey Dearing, opened the proceedings, welcoming everyone and emphasising how much he enjoyed this annual event as he never fails to be impressed and heartened by the good and hard work that happens every day within our Province and which often goes largely unnoticed.

He then invited each of the recipients of the twelve awards to receive their cheque and give a brief explanation of how they would use the donation.

This part of the morning proved to be quite emotional as one learned about the needs behind the work of each good cause and the important work carried out by volunteers in many cases. It was also satisfying to be able to help these groups from our local community. Please click here for details of the awards made to each recipient.

On completion of the presentations, Geoffrey closed the formal proceedings and then invited all those present to enjoy a buffet lunch before they departed. Lunch provided another opportunity for guests and award recipients to mingle and exchange ideas and offers of help with each other. For example, Greenbanks and SkillForce formed an instant bond and have already made plans to work together.
