Five Worshipful Masters from Medway Towns Lodges recently visited the Strood-based charity “Step and Learn” to present a donation of £1,300. The money was raised by a larger group of Medway Masters, not all of whom were able to attend the presentation. The donation was received on behalf of the charity by its Founder and Chairman, Rod Black, and its Treasurer, Angela Decker.

Step and Learn is a local charity dedicated to assist the physical and educational improvements of children with Cerebral Palsy and associated motor difficulties. The donation will be used by the charity to purchase some parallel bars for children of up to 11 years of age that attend the Centre. Any surplus will be used to help fund the purchase of other equipment needed by the charity.

The Masters agreed amongst themselves to support this charity as it is based in Medway and carries out valuable work for local children with cerebral palsy.

How did they raise the money?

Over the last year these Worshipful Masters met together frequently as they visited each other’s lodges and became great friends. Being charitable by nature and, to add some further interest to the time spent together after the meal, they would put a pound each into the kitty and bet on the time that the last Toast of the evening would be called. The winner would take the credit for guessing the nearest time and put his winnings into a pot which, over the year, built to the grand total of £1,300.

A great many local charities and other good causes have benefitted from donations raised in this way over the years and will no doubt continue to do so in future.
